Mental health as a resource

It is suggested that at the beginning of the training program you go through materials of the theme mental health as a resource. After this you may carry out workshops of different themes.

Orientation to the theme
- show House of resources on the screen for everyone
- interview your pair 5 minutes based on the questions on the sheet. Change turn.
- Discuss at the end how you can use House of resources with your students

Next you may go through the Power Point presentatation of mental health as a resource

Between the slides you may carry out these exercises:

1. Please study the list of internal and external protective factors of mental health. As a staff member you have influence on the students´ mental health. Which factors do you have influence on? In what scale? Please discuss in pairs and then in group.

2. Please discuss your everyday choices with the help of Hand of mental wellbeing. Please make a list of three decisions you could do better in your life.
Also discuss how to use hand of mental wellbeing with the students.

Mental health is
  • the foundation for wellbeing
  • a life skill that can be learned, taught, supported and strengthened
  • the balance between the individual and his or her community, not only something inside their head
  • something that changes depending on your life situation
  • resistance to knocks

Characteristics of good mental health are:
  • The ability to look after your own needs that are commensurate with your age group
  • Functional interaction skills
  • The ability and desire to work, go to school, enjoy free time activities and learn
  • The ability and will to participate in decision-making in your own life
  • Self-esteem
  • The desire and will to take others into consideration
  • Sufficient control of emotions
  • Good stress management
  • A realistic view of the self as a mental, physical and social being

Mental health skills can always be strengthened. They include for example emotional and awareness skills, life skills, as well as interpersonal and problem solving skills.
It is beneficial and rewarding to develop mental health skills.

At the end you may carry out exercise for closing the theme:

How can I support the mental health of a young person?

    By providing them with
    • a safe community for growing up where their feelings are accepted
    • time, encounters, presence, care and support
    • feelings of success
    • positive feedback; providing a behavioural model, teaching and reaffirming
    • acceptance
    • consistency and justice
    • boundaries
    • opportunities to find their own strengths and resources
    • information and help when needed
Which do you provide in your work? What are your strenghts and weaknesses in supporting mental wellbeing of students? Please, discuss with your pair and in group.
